South Flag Football Stays Hot with Dominant Weekend Sweep
Girls Varsity Flag FootballThe South Flag Football team continued its strong start to the season with a dominant weekend sweep, rolling past Riverside 34-0 on Friday before following it up with a 37-6 win over Wickliffe on Sunday to open league play 2-0.“I think most of the credit should go to our defense,” said quarterback Lindsay Nejak. “Our first game, we had a shutout, and in the second game, the defense only let up six points. They did a great job in coverage, getting a lot of interceptions and turnovers. Their effort and energy fed into the offense, allowing us to give our best performance.”That complementary effort fueled a Rebels offense that was nearly unstoppable across both games, as South improved to 8-1 overall behind a balanced attack through the air and on the ground.Nejak led the charge with an efficient and explosive weekend, completing 30-of-39 passes for 330 yards with six touchdowns and just one interception.“It’s a lot of fun to be able to just play the game with my teammates,” Nejak said. “

2026 Softball Preview: South Rebels
Girls Varsity SoftballThe Willoughby South Rebels enter the 2026 softball season with a mix of returning experience and promising youth, hoping that combination can propel them into contention in the Western Reserve Conference during its final season.Head coach Rusty Bliss begins his second year leading the program after guiding the Rebels to an 11-12-1 record last season, including a sectional victory over Hawken before falling to Uniontown Lake in a district semifinal.Despite replacing several key contributors, Bliss believes this year’s group has the pieces to make things interesting.“2026 should be a fun year for us,” Bliss said. “Even though we are going to be a young team and have to replace two really big bats on offense and two record-setting gloves on defense, this year's team will come out swinging, no pun intended.”That youth will be noticeable right away, with several freshmen expected to contribute immediately alongside a core of experienced upperclassmen.“Junior Makayla Schneider brings a big

DISTRICT BOUND: South Places Eight at Sectional
Boys Varsity WrestlingThe job wasn’t finished, but it was accomplished.Willoughby South advanced six wrestlers to next weekend’s OHSAA Division I district tournament and produced eight top-six placers Saturday at the sectional tournament at Pinkney East, using a mix of bonus points, late-match grit, and championship-match experience to keep its postseason moving forward.Tommy Rini and Cooper Fiebig led the way with runner-up finishes, while Owen Willis placed third, and Alexian Mendez, Collin Hollingsworth, and Michael Manzi each took fourth. Andrew Cirino and Charlie Kevern added fifth-place finishes to earn district alternate spots. For Rini at 144 pounds, the path to the finals was as dominant as it was efficient.A 45-second pin opened his day, and back-to-back technical falls pushed him into the championship bout against Brecksville state placer Cole Speer.“I felt that my offense today in my early matches was on point and that my attacks helped widen the gap between me and my opponents,” Rini said. “It w

Rebels surge past JFK to capture sectional title
Girls Varsity BasketballThe growth of Willoughby South’s young roster showed up in real time Saturday afternoon. With a sectional championship on the line and a familiar opponent across the floor, the Rebels delivered their most complete performance of the season, overwhelming host Cleveland JFK in the final eight minutes for a 58-34 victory and their fourth straight win.South (9-14) advances to face top-seeded Brush on Feb. 25, but the postgame celebration centered on something just as meaningful — a postseason breakthrough for a lineup with only one senior.“It was phenomenal,” interim coach Joe Pintar said. “It was a good confidence booster for our team. They went out and balled out today and played our game.”The Rebels set the tone early, building a 15-10 lead after one quarter behind the poised play of freshman Ava Proctor, who poured in five points in the opening frame on her way to a career-high 17. JFK matched South through the middle quarters, trimming the margin to six entering the fourth, but the Reb

The Rebels’ defensive pressure and balanced scoring helped them maintain the lead, even when JFK made pushes in the second half.Lanila Fatica led the way with 15 points, continuing her steady offensive production. Girls Varsity SwimmingSurvive and advance. That postseason mindset paid off in a big way for Willoughby South on Saturday, as the Rebels pushed eight swimmers through to the OHSAA Division I district meet, with senior Ava Shearer and sophomore Riley McDaniel leading the charge by qualifying in four events apiece. For Shearer, the accomplishment meant something more than a list of events — it meant another week in the water.“It is a huge relief knowing I have another week to swim,” Shearer said. “I put in a lot of work during the regular season to set myself up for success in the postseason, so it feels great to see that effort paying off. It’s a great time to celebrate the successes of sectionals and focus on getting ready for districts.”Shearer advanced in both of her individual races — the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke — and was a key piece of two qualifying relays. Her strongest swim came in the breaststroke, where she placed fifth in 1:11.03.“The 100 breaststroke was my best race because I had the opp

The win sends South into Tuesday’s road trip to Harvey with renewed confidence after closing strong down the stretch.“The girls don’t quit,” said South interim coach Joe Pintar. “They always play until the final buzzer.”Jefferson built early momentum, leading 12-6 after the first quarter and holding a slim edge through three periods behind a 17-point effort from Dani Furman. South struggled to find rhythm offensively, scoring just 24 points through the first three quarters before everything shifted late.“We let the game into our head, and we weren’t playing our style of basketball,” Pintar said. “We were trying to play what was being given to us,

Once we caught fire and created that momentum, we were able to build on it and control the second and third quarter.”After holding a slim 15-14 edge following the opening quarter, the Wildcats erupted for 22 points in the second and 23 more in the third, turning the game into a rout and building a commanding 60-20 lead heading into the final eight minutes.Montgomery led the charge, drilling six 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 20 points. Obviously, at the end, they pressured us a little bit, and that's just a new experience for this team. We're not used to really being up at the end of games, and something we want to be talking about more, but I'm very proud of their overall effort and playing together and sharing the ball.”Julia Scales was the centerpiece, dominating inside with rebounds and putbacks before stepping out to hit two 3-pointers on her way to 20 poin
